Summer Camps for Young Cooks

Of all the activities that are synonymous with summer, kids’ summer camps are up there for most memorable. For both sleepaway and day camps, there’s an increasing range of options and activities available to choose from. Sports, science, crafts, games and of course the outdoors are all waiting to be learned about and discovered! But at Buy Manitoba, we have a soft spot for food, so we rounded up a few camps that are based on teaching kids to cook, or incorporate food preparation into their programming.

 

Kids in the Kitchen at Mini U (University of Manitoba)

This week-long camp will have the children leading in the kitchen under the supervision of a trained professional chef. They’ll learn about kitchen safety, techniques for proper food handling, how to follow a recipe and more! Throughout the week, the focus is on transforming healthy ingredients into delicious snacks and meals. Participants will be assembling a recipe book that can be taken home at the end of the week.

All recipes prepared will be nut-free. Other food allergies or dietary restrictions may not be able to be accommodated.

Ages: 9 – 12

Hours: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm (3 hours/day of each classroom and rec. time)

Dates: July 7-11 OR
July 21-25

Bruce D. Campbell Farm & Food Discovery Centre – Summer Day Camp

This week-long camp focuses on a different topic each day: Monday, Little Green Thumb is about caring for a home garden including veggies and herbs; Tuesday is about Extraordinary Eggs, where campers learn about caring for chickens and the process of egg development; Wednesday is Dairy Day complete with a dairy tour; and Thursday, World of Wheat, will see campers engaged in hands-on learning by following the stages of wheat from planting to harvest. Each day will involve cooking with Pizza Day on Friday combining ingredients from each!

Ages: 7-13

Hours: Drop-off between 8:30 – 10:00 am
Pick-up between 3:30 – 4:30 pm

Dates: July 21-25

The Food Studio – Summer Cooking Camp for Kids

If you’re raising a budding chef or your child loves to be in the kitchen, this is the camp for your family! This year The Food Studio is offering two week-long half-day camp sessions for little chefs who want to be challenged in the kitchen. The camp will take a fun-filled approach while teaching a range of basic skills in the kitchen. The week ends in a meal challenge!

Hours: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Dates: July 14-18 OR
August 11-15

The Food Studio – Teens Only Cooking Camp

This session is aimed at Cooking Camp Alumni, kids who have taken Home Economics in school, or generally have an interest and experience in the kitchen. This day camp includes daily field trips, with some kitchen experiments and lots of cooking.

Ages: 13-17

Hours: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Dates: August 5-8

Cost: $275 + GST

Day Camps at The Wellness Institute

The Wellness Institute has several week-long programs that encourage children to express themselves and become physically active and healthy. Three programs involve cooking classes: Krafty Kids Junior, Krafty Kids Senior, and Kid Fit.

Ages: 5-7 for Krafty Kids Junior
8-12 for Krafty Kids Senior and Kid Fit

Hours: Drop-off between 8:00 – 9:00 am
Pick-up between 4:00 – 5:00 pm

Dates: Throughout July and August

Cost: From $125-155
