Fantastic Foods – September

With so many delicious Manitoba products to choose from, it can be tough to pick a new one to try. So every month, we are featuring a few of our current favourites and how we like to enjoy them – bon appétit!

John Boy Farms – Apple Syrup:Fall is apple season, and there are so many ways to prepare the amazing fruit – but this has to be one of the most versatile! John Boy Farms makes this syrup in small batches, and while it’s sweet, the apple taste isn’t overwhelming. It makes a tasty trade for maple syrup on top of pancakes and waffles, or can be mixed in to salad dressings and meat marinades. For a delicious fall breakfast, try adding a bit to pumpkin oatmeal!

Granny’s Poultry – Whole Turkey (Fresh): Thanksgiving is around the corner, and we can’t ignore the star of the (dinner) show – the turkey! Grannys’ fresh whole turkey is of course juicy and tender, but also very convenient; at least, as much as cooking a turkey can be. Thawing a frozen turkey outside of the fridge isn’t exactly food-safe, but thawing in the fridge for a few days often just isn’t an option due to space – and that’s why this option is so great. If you’d like to cut out a few steps from Thanksgiving dinner prep while still wowing your dinner guests with a great meal, this turkey is for you!

Smak Dab – Beer Chipotle Mustard: With just the right amount of heat and subtle taste of beer, this whole grain mustard is a versatile condiment for family meals to gourmet entertaining. On those warmer autumn days when you are still barbecuing a beef or chicken burger, try putting a ‘smak dab’ of this amazing mustard to create a new taste from the ordinary. The line of artisinal mustards is available at St. Norbert Farmers’ Market; keep an eye out for seasonal and weekly special flavours!
