With so many delicious Manitoba products to choose from, it can be tough to pick a new one to try. So every month, we are featuring a few of our current favourites and how we like to enjoy them – bon appétit!
La Cocina Foods – Tortilla Chips (Original): It was a very pleasant surprise to learn that this long-time family favourite is produced nearby in Ste. Anne, Manitoba! La Cocina’s perfectly crispy tortilla chips are in a class of their own. They’re thin and lightly salted, and have the most satisfying crunch! They’re made with high grade, stone-ground corn, and suitable for gluten-free diets. The authentic Mexican style tortillas complement many dishes, but sometimes simplicity is best – serve them up with some Delicious Kicks salsa for an easy, tasty snack.
Oak Island Acres Goat Dairy – Feta Cheese: If you like feta or goat cheese (and how could you not?), this best-of-both-worlds cheese is for you. While other feta may be made only partially with goat milk, Oak Island Acres is made entirely from goat milk, from their own herd of almost 600 goats (that are not treated with any antibiotics, hormones or growth enhancers)! The result is a deliciously tangy cheese with a great texture. While it would be easy enough to eat a bunch of this feta on its own, it goes incredibly well crumbled into a spinach and strawberry salad.
Solberry – Seabuckthorn Puree: An explosion of nutrients? Yes please! If you are trying to live a healthy lifestyle, then adding Seabuckthorn Puree to your daily regime is a must. Seabuckthorn, a hardy, thorny shrub that bears small orange/yell/red fruits and is protected by sharp thorns, has been referred to as the “most nutritionally complete food in the world.” It’s a powerful antioxidant, full of essential fatty acids and a unique array of vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, flavonoids and plant sterols. Take a tablespoon straight in the morning to help kick-start your day without caffeine! Alternatively you can mix a tablespoon with water, juice, yogurt or add it to a smoothie. Take your Solberry experience to the next level by making sauces, vinaigrettes or sorbet!
Winkler Meats – Farmer Sausage Slices: Winkler Meats has now been making farmer sausage for 50 years, and they put all that experience to good use in their products – they take pride in making a premium, traditional sausage, that’s made using high quality pork cuts that are lightly and naturally smoked. While their farmer sausage is made in a range of styles, the slices in particular are great for summer barbecues. Try grilling some slices like you would a burger patty! Even better, top it with sauerkraut, fried onions, or some Elman’s hot mustard.
