Gourmet Inspirations owner, operator and chef Peter Fehr has spent the past two years developing a line of high-end specialty finishing sauces to help amateur chefs wow their dinner guests. The four sauces - creamy peppercorn whiskey, sweet & spicy lemon, fresh strawberry balsamic with basil and chocolate port - are made with local ingredients wherever possible. They are finishing products for use on a variety of meats from steak to chicken and fish.

This fun afternoon event took place in centre court of the Forks Market and featured cooking demonstrations with Peter Fehr in the Forks’ topflight test kitchen, live music with local acts The Burning Kettles and Elessar Thieesen, and prizes from DeLucas and a catered backyard barbecue party for six!

Gourmet Inspirations’ sauces will be available at the Generation Green at the Forks Market, at farmers markets around the province this summer (including St. Norbert, Pineridge Hollow and Boissevain) as well as online at FoodiePages.ca a Toronto-based web site selling products by Canada’s best food producers, farmers and artisans. Jeanne Van Landeghem, the namesake of Jeanne's Bakery, and her husband, started the Bakery in 1936. Over the past 75 years Jeanne's has become a well known Winnipeg landmark, that has been serving up its delicious dainties and cookie bottom cakes to Winnipeggers, out of towners, and even celebrities and royalty.

Jeanne’s Bakery offers a selection of Traditional and Specialty cakes. Most people are familiar with Jeanne’s Traditional cakes that include a choice of four cake flavours: white, chocolate, marble, and banana, with crunchy dark chocolate curls on the sides of the cake, creamy but not too sweet icing and their signature melt in your mouth shortbread cookie crust. In my opinion it’s all about the shortbread cookie on the bottom, which I always save for last!

You can pick up your Jeanne’s cake at the Bakery or at a number of retail locations in Winnipeg. Click here for a full list of Jeanne’s products and where you can purchase them.

Proper storage of your Jeanne’s cake is the key to keeping it fresh. Here are some tips on how to keep your Jeanne’s cake moist until the last bite!

Sweet Storage Tips - How to keep your Jeanne’s cake fresh

1. Never refrigerate a Jeanne’s cake; it will dry out in less than 30 minutes.

2. You can freeze and re-freeze a Jeanne’s cake.

3. A Jeanne’s cake will stay fresh in the freezer for 4 months.

4. A Jeanne’s cake will stay fresh for 5 days on the counter at room temperature.

5. Keep your Jeanne’s cake out of direct sunlight.

1. Always jump start your day with a healthy breakfast. If you don’t have much of an appetite in the morning start with enjoying something small, like fruit and yoghurt or a homemade fruit smoothie. If you’re looking for a healthy breakfast on the go, grab a Gorp bar. These all natural energy bars are perfect for those on the go in the morning.

2. Drink lots of water throughout the day, this will keep you focused, hydrated and full. Add a little flavour to your water with sliced lemon, lime, orange or watermelon. If you like fizzy drinks, try a sparkling water from Canadian Gold Beverages.

3. Eat smaller meals but more frequently throughout the day to keep you energized and your metabolism going strong.

4. Incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet as snacks throughout the day. These healthy snacks will give you the energy and nutrients your body needs.

5. Commit to trying a new vegetable recipe each week. Vegetables are super nutritious and also quite versatile. Peak of the Market has an email subscription service where you can sign up to receive a free vegetable recipe every day.

6. Incorporate more plant proteins in your diet, such as pulses. Pulses are the edible seeds of legumes, they are high in protein and fiber and many are produced right here in Manitoba! Check out this delicious and nutritious soup recipe from Best Cooking Pulses.

7. Take the time to prepare bulk meals at home. Prepare your favourite meals in bulk and divide into smaller portions to freeze so you always have a healthy meal on hand.

8. Practice mindful eating. Slow down and take the time to enjoy your food in its entirety – savour the smells, flavors, and sensations. This will help you fully appreciate your food and also maintain a healthy body weight as you’ll be more aware of when your body is full.

9. When dining out try sharing a meal or saving half of what you’ve ordered for later. Restaurants often serve large portions and we finish our plates not realizing how much we have actually eaten. Plus, leftovers are often much yummier the next day!

10. Last, but certainly not least… make sure to enjoy your food and especially sharing it with family and friends!
